There are several different ways to install Debian. For the purpose of readability, we will list these in sequential order from most recommended to least. If the first method doesn't work, try the second, and so on.

[edit] Method 1: Debian-Intaller

The easiest way to install Debian is via Debian-Installer (aka 'debian-netinst'). This downloads all of the packages you select rather than requiring you to insert some of the total of seven CDs included with the full standard distribtion installer. Debian-Installer is still considered beta but works arguably better than the standard installer.

[edit] Method 2: Regular Debian Install

This basically involves downloading the first CD from the main Debian page, selecting no additional packages when presented with the option, and going back later to add more. Note that this will require more upgrading later since the packages on the CD are dated, and reiser/ext3 are not available by default on the partitioner.

  • You may download the needed CD image from one of the mirrors on here.
  • The installation manual is located here.

[edit] Method 3: Debian Derivative Install

If you don't like the Debian installation/setup process, consider installing an Debian derivative with an easier setup and configuration interface. For example Ubuntu installs reasonably easy and works out of the box for the most part whereas standard Debian requires a bit more attention and customization (which some prefer).
