[edit] Introduction

This article describes the various options for installing a Linux distribution on an Asus EeePC. As of now, all variations of the EeePC ship stock with a proprietary reworking of the Xandros OS. This is actually a spawn of the Debian Linux distro, (which also happens to be the predecessor of the Clemson-supported Ubuntu Linux). As such, if you've worked with Ubuntu before, then you'll probably set right into the original OS of the EeePC. This article is for those that are not satisfied with the functionality of the stock Xandros and are instead looking for some more out of their ultraportable Eee.

[edit] Stock OS (Custom Xandros)

There are a couple options for using the original operating system:

[edit] Stock Mode

This is the default mode. You are presented with tabbed sets of icons related to Networking, Learn, Play, etc. There really isn't much you can do with this mode. It's great if you want to just use the EeePC quickly to jump online, check email, chat, etc. However, if you're looking to add additional programs, utilities, write code, etc., you'll have to activate and switch to full desktop mode.
