There are many free and easy to use media players available for Linux.

Here are a few of the basics:

  • VLC Player - VLC supports the following formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, DVD, VCD, and various other streaming formats. It is easy to use and requires you to install no codecs to run.
  • MPlayer - Similar in capability to VLC with the addition of RealMedia support.
  • xine - xine will play most common formats and some of the least common formats available.
